Absent Voters List 1918 for St Mary's Parish

St Mary's Remembers WW1 - a place for posting stories about the servicemen and women who lived in St Mary's Parish. It also included six separate photographs of the panels at St Mary's which are large enough to enable the names to be read.

Description of the memorial and its site from the Barnsley Chronicle 28 October 1922

"The architect of the scheme and the desiginer of the memorial windows is Mr F C Eden, Gray’s Inn Square, London.  When the project was first mooted it was found that neither the body of the church nor the chancel offered facilities for the erection of a comprehensive memorial, and there remained, therefore, the north and south chancel aisles or chapels, the former of which is occupied by the organ and gives access to the vestries.  The south chancel aisle, then in use as a Lady Chapel, was selected as presenting the best opportunity for general treatment.

The scheme involved some structural alterations.  The arcade of three arches, which divided the chapel has been removed, the level of the ceiling adjusted, the external doorway near the east end of the south wall closed up, and a new door opened in the west wall.  The war memorial occupies the centre of the chapel.  It is a hexagonal timber column, richly coloured, surmounted by artistic tabernacle work enshrining six panels inscribed with the names of the fallen and a tier of saints above."

Restoration 2020

The memorial was restored in 2020 with funding from the War Memorials Trust, South Yorkshire Community Federation and Barnsley Council under a project headed by the Friends of St Mary's. There was a report in the Barnsley Chronicle on 26 September 2020, p.10.

"The six panels had been damaged by water ingress and general age," said Jane [Ainsworth]. "So we fundraised to have it cleaned and conserved ... The conservators did say they'd never come across anything like it, as a memorial. Most importantly, we wanted all the names to be readable, so people can pay their respects to everyone on it."

Names:
Where further information on a name has been researched by our volunteers it will be linked here (look for the names in blue) to a page on this site or to an external site.

Barnsley Chronicle 28 October 1922 (thanks to Barnsley Archives)

This list of names has been transcribed from the newspaper cutting above.  We have also now cross referenced it with the actual memorial.  On the memorial the letter H is easily mistaken for a letter D which has caused some confusion!
