Newspaper research by BarnsleyHistorian.

Two mentions of this memorial have now been found - in the Barnsley Chronicle on 11 August 1923, see cutting below, and in a history of All Saints Church, in Darton, by James Dearnley, which can be found in Barnsley Archives.

Edit: March 2019
The Darton Working Men's Club & Institute Roll of Honour has been found stored in the Darton Liberal Club, which is indicated on the map above just below the church.

It is very impressive, about 4' wide x 5' high in a heavy frame (for scale note the supporting hand at the top right). The Fallen men are listed in the scroll below the central panel.

The Club are hoping to be able to display it in one of their main rooms in the near future.

The speckled granite stone of the memorial and the condition of the inset lettering (in lead) makes this memorial very difficult to read and photograph.

Barnsley Conservative Club, Pitt Street, Barnsley

Barnsley Chronicle 26 July 1919
(thanks to Barnsley Archives)
This newspaper cutting from the Barnsley Chronicle in July 1919 refers to the unveiling of a photograph of the members of the club who served in the First World War.

Mention is made, unfortunately without names, of two old members who fell in the war.

The club also planned to have a Roll of Honour for the sons of members of the Club.

On a recent visit to the Barnsley Conservative Club on Pitt Street in the town centre enquiries were made, however nothing was known of any kind of memorial, photo or roll of honour.

Do you know where they might be?

A newspaper report from the Sheffield Daily Telegraph (on Find My Past) relates the formal opening of the new premises for the Club on Pitt Street in September 1901.  This is presumably the same building the Club occupies now.

Inscription beneath each set of three panels of names:

Adams to Crane (click to enlarge)
The panels have recently been cleaned, they were previously much darker in colour and the size of the lettering is quite small.  As a consequence capturing the names required individual photos of each panel and the contrast between the pale wood and the gold paint was not very great.  Here is one example.

This Roll of Honour and further information about the Pitt Street Methodist Church can be found in Barnsley Archives
This document lists 15 men who were killed and 122 men who also served in the war, it is dated 6th January 1918, so it is almost certain that it was not a complete list.  There may have been other versions - was it published in a church magazine?
