Inscription on both plaques:

European War
To the Glory of God in Memory of the Fallen
From the District of Saint James, this Reredos is Erected
Greater love hath no man than this, that
A man lay down his life for his friends
At Rest
[names]
Jesu, Mercy

Information:

The dedication and unveiling of the carved oak Reredos at St James Church, Wath-in-Dearne (sic), took place on Thursday 18 March 1920. It was reported in the Mexborough and Swinton Times on 20 March 1920. The names of 70 men of the parish who had fallen in the war were read out and were listed in the newspaper report.
However, there are 82 names on the above framed plaques, 40 on the first shown and 42 on the second. Both lists are almost entirely in alphabetical order and are different from each other.
There are some spelling differences between the newspaper report and the plaques, for example Garbett and Garbutt or Pyott and Pyot and even Burdin and Durdin!

The information on the IWM War Memorials Register is somewhat inaccurate. A submission will be made, including the above images, with a request to update the entry for this memorial.

Names:

Where further information has been discovered for any of these men it will be linked (look for names underlined and in blue) to a page on this site or to an external site. In this way we try to avoid duplication and encroaching on the research of other groups and individuals.
