Researched by BarnsleyHistorian with advice on the local area from PG

Two newspaper articles have been found describing this memorial, they are the only evidence we have of its existence. One was very brief, in the Sheffield Independent, 29 April 1922, p. 9, but the second discovered, in the Penistone, Stocksbridge and Hoyland Express, 29 April 1922, p. 6, gave some detail of the event and a list of the men commemorated.

'Club War Memorial. - On Sunday last, before a large assembly, Alderman Gabriel Price unveiled the Great Houghton High Street Working Men's Club War Memorial, the club president, Mr. J. Ramsbottom, occupying the chair. The company present included relatives if the fallen, members of the W.M.C. and the Great Houghton Boy Scouts. The Memorial consists of enlarged photographs of the eleven members who made the supreme sacrifice.

[names - see below]

Alderman Price made touching Reference to the heroes they were commemorating, and to those who had the good fortune to return, at the same time deploring the circumstances under which many of the latter were now obliged to eke out an existence.  He sincerely hoped that the result of the present conference at Genoa would be a world-wide peace so that the sacrifices and achievements of the glorious dead would not have been in vain. Councillor J. Potts gave a very brief but touching address.  He referred to the early days of the war, and how, when the call was made, some thirty percent of the eligible male population of the Great Houghton District answered the call, and in so small an area 45 men gave their lives. Following the formal unveiling by Ald. Price, the "Last Post" was sounded by the Scout buglers. At the conclusion Mr. J. Hisley proposed a vote of thanks to the speakers, and Mr. W. R. Tinker, the club secretary, seconded.'
