According to the minutes of the Woolley War Memorial Committee, which are held in the West Yorkshire Archives in Wakefield (C506/12/1), the memorial was  unveiled on Sunday 29th May 1921 at 6pm.  At that time the inscription and list of names were inscribed on a bronze plate. The following inscription had been proposed by the Committee - we do not know if this was the actual wording finalised.

In Loving Memory of the men of this Parish
who sacrificed their lives
in the service of their Country
1914 - 1918
Reginald Joe Banks
John Empsall
Charles Langfield
Joe Middlebrook Nussey
George Robinson
Leonard Stennett
Herbert Sutton

Another bronze plate was added after the Second World War when the first was also cleaned.  When the plates were changed to stone tablets and the men from Woolley Colliery and Brick Row added we don't know.

Men listed on this memorial may well be included in the Barnsley WW1 Roll of Honour, it depends if they were born in the current Barnsley MBC area or if they lived within the area at the time they enlisted.  It's complicated!
