The original memorial tablet, as described in the 1920 newspaper cutting was black marble, the present plaque (above), which can be seen in the parcel collection office in Pitt Street, is wooden.

The article above mentions a marble memorial, however the one currently on display in Barnsley post office is made of wood.
ReplyDeleteThis memorial is located in the caller's office (where you collect undelivered parcels, etc) and requires permission from the office manager to remove or relocate even on a temporary basis.
Does anyone know what happened to the original?
I presume that during the sixties when the GPO transferred to it's office on Pitt street
It could also have been changed when they added the WW2 names as the wooden one (the current plaque) lists names of men from both wars.
