Researched, transcribed and photographed by BarnsleyHistorian and Nigel Croft

The memorial had lost its urn before our first photograph in 2009, and between then and 2013 the shrubs around it had grown so large that it was almost impossible to get pictures of the inscriptions on the sides of the pillar.  In July 2014 work has obviously been carried out, first the panels on the pillar appeared cleaner and the undergrowth had been cut back and then one evening an Urn appeared!  We pulled the car to a rapid stop and leapt out to photograph the new arrival.  Great news. Thank you to whoever is responsible.

I met Gill Brookes today who told me about this site. My uncle William Brown is named on the memorial, and I showed Gill some medals and also the Dead Man`s Penny (a five inch bronze plaque) which has William`s name on it. I am surprised to find how many people have never seen these bronze plaques, as they were awarded to every family who had lost someone in the war.The war memorial used to be in the school yard, and I remember climbing on it as a child. No wonder it needed some refurbishment!
